I had this little dream the other night: when Severus Snape dies, his life sort of “resets”. He wakes up to this little girl, and while he doesn’t understand exactly what’s going on, he knows this life is his, she’s his daughter, and that Lily is in the kitchen downstairs. I told Kit, and she said I had to draw the dream.

The acquittal of Casey Anthony has divided America. Some people feel that the jury was right to clear her of murdering her daughter because the evidence against her was inconclusive. Others insist that her bizarre, callous behavior was strong enough proof of guilt. Anthony’s lawyer complained of a “media assassination,” and he had a fair point.

Contrast that with the treatment of Lizzie Borden, who was born on July 19, 1860. In the 1890s, Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an ax. She had means and motive and acted just as oddly as Casey Anthony. Yet most of the media pronounced her innocent and attacked the police for even arresting her. Surely, they reasoned, a woman couldn’t commit such a brutal crime?

A few weeks ago I wrote a post decrying people saying that Wonder Woman’s classic bathing suit costume look like something a stripper or a prostitute would wear. It’s not that I am particularly enamored of the old costume. It’s more that I am tired of people trying to tie the amount of skin a woman shows to her sex life.

While I’m not huge fan of the classic costume, I’m also not a huge hater. Given the many changes, reboots, and writers Wonder Woman has gone through in the last few years, there’s something to say for the comfort of her iconography. As I’ve said before, I probably wouldn’t have been as opposed to the (now sadly) 1st costume designed by Jim Lee if hadn’t become so emblematic of the first 6 issues of the horrible Odyssey reboot.

But there are other costumes I outright despise. Here’s a hint on one at the top of the list; “Belly Window.”

It’s not the Huntress Hush costume is just ugly, which it is. Or that it took what had been a costume that made perfect sense for the character and made it into a mishmash of the worst of comic costuming including knee pads and pouches. It was that the costume was stupid. It gave a character who had been shot in the stomach a panel in her costume that exposed exactly where she was shot. At a time when Robin had finally got a costume without exposed legs, Huntress got practically everything exposed.

Just look at it.

My reason for inflicting that costume on you this morning is the rumor that DC is going to have all their female characters wear pants in an effort to have more practical outfits.

Holy Huntress, I hope not. That’s just silly. And here’s why.

The Grand Rapids Massacre

This is part detailed recap of the situation, part commentary on various aspects of the event, part blog from my perspective of the events. Please excuse me if I say something you consider offensive or uncouth. This situation is somewhat difficult to process when you’re in it, and I also want to be honest about what I thought about things at the time. The details of the massacre (and it was a massacre) are still unfolding, so some of the facts may change.

On July 7th, in the afternoon, police received a phone call from a woman, who said her son had called her and told her he’d just shot and killed his wife. Upon investigation, two crime scenes were discovered about 3 miles apart, with a total of 7 victims dead, the largest homicide in Grand Rapids history. Two of the victims were children, though it wasn’t until the chaos was almost done before we learned there were two children involved. One was his daughter.

This gets long, so I’m gonna put a jump here. What follows are all the details as I know them right now. Needless to say, this post has a lot of violence and traumatic things.

Officer: So you like to give money away. You make a habit of giving money away.
Man: What does that have to do with this situation?
Officer: You knowingly walked down Dundritch Street in your suit when everyone knows you like to give away money, and then you didn't fight back. It sounds like you gave money to someone, but now you're having after-donation regret. Tell me, do you really want to ruin his life because of your mistake?
Man: This is ridiculous!
Officer: This is a rape analogy. This is what women face every single day when they try to bring their rapists to justice.
